** Disclaimer ** I may be the only person who had not previously read this book, so bear with me.
---------
I'm sure many of you have read Akira before, but I just read it in it's entirety over the past three days.
All I can say is damn. It is amazing.
I saw the movie a long while back, and I liked it even though there were many plot points that seemed unfulfilled. Some one mentioned the comic version online last week, so I thought I'd download it and give it a try.
As soon as I finished issue one, I was hooked. While I was at work, all I could think about was going home and reading it. It'd been a long time, since a book has been on my mind that consistently.
I find it's very rare to find a book in which the situation in the beginning of the series completely changes many times to become something entirely different in the end. The compelling subplots, a great amount of interesting (and rotating) characters, and constant change in the book is substantial. And it's very interesting taking note of how much it's influenced comics, manga, anime, and film still to this day.
If you haven't read it, read it ASAP. It's one of those books where about 1/4 of your way through the series, you'll realize it's one of the best series you've ever read. At least, that's how it was for me.
In short, read Akira. It's fucking awesome.

I also haven't read it, but I will say that I've watched the movie at least twice and I hated it both times. I just found it really, really overrated. But I'm willing to give the books a chance if you're saying it's this good.

Just want to second Bennett on this. Kaneda, the piece of shit lead character, is on of my all time favorite heroes. I consider Akira the ultimate unfilmed action epic. You can find all 6 volumes at your local ABQ library.
